Begin the day with a warm welcome at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar, where our guide will introduce the day’s journey through the heart of the old city. Meet fellow travelers, hear about the cultural significance of “Shehr-e-Khaas,” and get ready for an authentic experience of Srinagar’s heritage.
Our tour starts with exploring Jama Masjid, an architectural masterpiece built in 1394 by Sultan Sikandar. This magnificent wooden mosque is known for its 378 wooden pillars and Indo-Saracenic architecture. As we walk through, our guide will share stories of the mosque’s rich history, its reconstruction by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin (Budshah), and its role as a central place of worship and community gathering for centuries.
After exploring Jama Masjid, we’ll stroll through the bustling lanes of Jama Masjid Market and downtown Srinagar. Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and vibrant colors of these markets, where local vendors sell everything from spices and textiles to traditional handicrafts. The walk through the narrow lanes provides an authentic glimpse into Srinagar’s traditional urban life.
Our next stop is the Budshah Tomb, a grand structure dedicated to Sultan Zain-ul- Abidin, known as Budshah (“the Great King”). Built by his wife in the 15th century, this tomb is a fine example of medieval Kashmiri architecture. Discover the legacy of Budshah, celebrated for his patronage of arts, culture, and his benevolent rule that left a lasting impact on Kashmiri society.
We then proceed to Pathar Masjid, constructed by Empress Nur Jahan in 1623. The mosque, made from locally quarried limestone, stands out for its unique architectural style and lack of typical mosque features such as domes and minarets. The guide will share insights into its historical significance and unique place in Kashmiri and Mughal heritage.
Our final destination is Bait-ul-Miras, a century-old heritage building. Here, enjoy a traditional Kashmiri lunch and a cup of kahwa, watching the brewing process in a samovar. Afterward, explore the gallery and watch artisans demonstrate the crafts Kashmir is known for, including pashmina weaving and pottery, providing a
memorable insight into the region’s artistic heritage.
Conclude the tour with a comfortable drop-off at Jama Masjid, taking home memories of Srinagar’s heritage and culture.
